Western Civ I Questions: Week 19

As I prepare to write a post concerning ancient Western civilization, I stop to ask myself a few questions, find your personal answers if you wish, this will likely come up in my next or last post and might interest you further.
Religion in will-be Europe
St. Boniface was known for defacing things to worship old gods and using this to convince people to convert, why did this work? The minds of people are stubborn, once they have created their worldview, they do not want to change it, as it would shatter the reality of all they know, so why does it work to simply chol down Thor's tree?
What is the difference between faith, and refusal of reality? Muslims refused science as an altogether concept because they believed the fact God created laws to nature was, in their view, undermining to God and how he is all-powerful. Is this going too far?
While the greens and the blues were fighting, the leaders of Byzantine executed some people from each party. Why did this cause the greens and the blues to come together?
