Writer's picture: JulieC ClarkJulieC Clark

As I prepare to write a post concerning ancient Western civilization, I stop to ask myself a few questions, find your personal answers if you wish, this will likely come up in my next or last post and might interest you further.

The New Christian Society

  • What is the political significance of religion? Religion played a large part of society in the Mediterranean area for a long time, Popes had large amounts of power. Was this a good thing, should the concept still be around in today's society?

  • What can be learned from the negative experience of the rule of Charlemagne? Charlemagne was a tyrant who exercised his power with great authority, going as far as to undermine the purpose of the church. How can we benefit from this knowledge of tyranny going forward?

  • Why were the Barbarian people so convinced they could not be as good as Rome was? In some ways the people believed that they could be better in the future, but they shouldn't even try to be as good at arts and agriculture as Rome used to be just because they simply couldn't yet. Why do people think this way, should people think this way?

  • What is the difference between taking something that is not yours, and making something yours? Those trying to convert the Anglo Saxons to Christianity chose rather than to destroy the old temples, to convert the buildings for Christian worship. Do you think the Christians were right to do this? Most importantly, what value can be found in culture created by these acts?
