The Body System, III: Cardiovascular System

The cardiovascular system, also called the circulatory system, moves blood throughout the body. It delivers oxygen and nutrients to our cells and carries away waste, such as carbon dioxide. The system helps keep us alive by making sure our organs get what they need to work properly.
Three important parts of the cardiovascular system are the heart, arteries, and veins. The heart pumps blood throughout the body. Arteries carry blood away from the heart to the body, while veins carry blood back to the heart. Together, they keep blood moving in a continuous cycle. An interesting fact is that your heart keeps pumping blood even while you sleep.
