As I prepare to write a post concerning Western civilization, I stop to ask myself a few questions, find your personal answers if you wish, this will likely come up in my next or previous post and might interest you further.

The Catholic Reformation - Philip II (1550s Europe)

  • Unlike the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Reformation actually fit the definition of a Reformation. In your opinion, what was the best thing the church did to get back to the original ideals of the Catholic faith?

  • Pope Paul IV had the view that the Pope should rule over the king. How was this traditionally incorrect? How and why could this have been detrimental to the church?

  • Charles V has been labeled as a bad king in the history books, but he was an important figure in Western civ. Did he do any good during his rule over Spain and nearby territories?

  • Philip II is a good example of why force should be used strategically, if at all, when governing a large people. What should Philip II have done?
