As I prepare to write a post concerning ancient Western civilization, I stop to ask myself a few questions, find your personal answers if you wish, this will likely come up in my next or last post and might interest you further.

The Avigon Papacy - France in the Fourteenth Century

  • During the time the papacy had temporarily relocated to Avion, bishops would often get paid for being bishop over many places which he had never stepped foot in. How is this a good example of part of the economic and political problems today?

  • During the end of the fourteenth century crisis, there was a problem concerning labor, less people to work, higher their price could be. Government stepped in and attempted to simply say, everyone must act like the plague did not happen, keep your prices like you would've then. How is this unnecessary interference so intrusive and unhelpful? Why is this so common, and yet so easily brushed off today?

  • John Wycliff preached many things that went in favor of the rule of the monarchy over the papacy. He made many interesting points, but if you look at his views, many are quite flawed. Look at this man and tell me what you can stand with him for, and what sounds completely backwards?

  • In the lead up to the hundred years' war, it was debated whether or not the king of England should also be the king of France. Those who thought it unwise to have one man rule both places gave a legitimate argument against it, but the argument was made to keep one man from ruling over both England and France. Do you think this would've been a good idea? Why or why not?
