Astronomy: Taking Interest

Writer's picture: JulieC ClarkJulieC Clark

Astronomy, the study of celestial objects, and the physical universe. Science is not everyone’s strong suit, however, astronomy can be interesting in ways other sciences may not be. Think about it, the universe, it’s a pretty big concept. It's one that everyone fails to comprehend in entirety. Although there is a lot to it; one could say it's part of why different religions exist.

Religion was originally “created” as a way for people to comprehend the things around them. It wasn’t really created, but a concept always in the minds of humans, something to rely on. Atheists rely on science. They are confident that even though we haven’t come up with all the answers yet science will, and does, explain everything. That is where their faith resides. In a sense, most everyone has that faith.

Earth, Earth lives in the solar system. Well, where does the solar system live? The Milky Way galaxy, but where does that come from? Our galaxy lives in the Local Group, which lives in the Virgo Supercluster, and that resides in the visible universe. Our physical universe is not turtle on turtle. It may go on forever, but what lives outside our visible universe? We may never know the full extent, not before the sun dies thousands of years from now.

Earth is a minute dot next to the sun and the sun is just as small to the Milky Way. That makes people smaller than dust in the eyes of the universe, and yet there are still life forms in water and bacteria that we tiny humans need special equipment just to see. Life is not comprehensible, no matter how hard humans try, although we do need to satisfy our curiosity a little, right?

That’s what science is for, making theories, learning about the speed of light and dark matter. No answer can be confirmed. Einstein first came up with the idea that dark matter could be a thing but he dropped the idea because the rest of science didn’t back it up, but he shouldn’t have, because dark matter is a thing. We just didn’t have enough proof til’ now. Maybe in a couple hundred years we will be proved wrong again. We just don’t know. The human mind is a wonderful and creative thing, which is why anything can be interesting, whether you’ll ever get any actual answers or not.

I liked how you added that science could possibly prove us wrong again in the future, smart thinking!
